How it works...
Just like all upgrade processes, the VMM upgrade process requires planning. Start by confirming that the current server/VM meets the system requirements for a newer VMM.
Decide the upgrade method, either an in-place upgrade and upgrading to another server. An in-place upgrade will not be successful if the database version is not supported.
Back up the current VMM database. If you're running SQL Express Edition, you will need to uninstall the existing VMM server, retaining the data. You will then need to install a fully-supported SQL version, restore the VMM database, and then start the VMM upgrade process.
Start the VMM installer and carry out the upgrade steps, reviewing and paying special attention to the database and DKM configuration, and confirming your options in all of the upgrade dialogs. At the end of the process, open the VMM console to confirm the upgrade and update the agent hosts to the newer VMM.
