The Great Yellow River, originally known as the Tune of the Boatmen, is a song created by a boatman named Li Siming from a county of Shaanxi Province, who worked on the Yellow River. In the celebration of Spring Festival in 1920, Li and one of his countrymen Zhang Shiming improvised this tune in an antiphonal form, beginning with the words “Do you know how the Yellow River meanders?” It was notated in a relatively fixed form in 1942, which contributed to its increased popularity. This song was also placed at the beginning of the Shaanxi volume of CollectionsofChineseFolkSongs. The arrangement in this anthology, based on the original melody, absorbs desirable characteristics of various earlier oral versions, expands its form and endows it with new artistic quality.
